My Stay @ Christian Medical College & Hospital Vellore & the astonishing facts of the place

Having spent a few days @ CMC Vellore for my brother's treatment, I was as anxious as any on else to know the history of the famous Christian Medical College & hospital. I started talking to the nurses & other staff & digging out  on the internet on the history of the place.

I have compiled a few facts which are as astonishing as exciting.

The hotel was founded by Dr. Ida Sophia Scudder as one-bed clinic in Vellore in 1900. In 1902, she built a 40-bed hospital. In 1909, she started the School of Nursing and, in 1918. She opened a medical school for women in 1942, under the name Christian Medical College. Men were admitted to this college only in 1947, ten in a class of 35.

The hospital now caters close to 6000 outpatients, 2500 inpatients every day!

Now each year 60 students, of which at least 25 are women, are admitted for the undergraduate medical course (M.B.B.S)

The hospital has 7,600 staff, including over 1,200 doctors and 2,400 nurses. There are 95 wards including 15 ICUs. There are 40 + Operation Theaters & does close to 200 operations each day.

Despite all this , this place gives a cost effective medical treatment to all patients & has patients pouring in from all across the nation as well as neighboring countries.

Salutes to Ida Scudder & all the others who made this happen & have used this noble profession to serve for 100 yrs.
